Abstract
326,349. Henderson, W. S. and Henderson, B. B., (trading as Hendy Aircraft Co.), and Miles, H. A. March 7, 1929. Planes, arrangement and construction of. - Aircraft wings or tail planes of the pure cantilever or semi-cantilever types, or parts thereof, have a framework comprising front and rear spars a, b, each having top and bottom flanges g, interconnected by a plurality of cross members e to form bays f and a system of diagonal bracing members h capable of withstanding compressive and tensile stresses arranged in or near each of the planes of the spar flanges. The webs c of the spans a, b, may be of plywood and have vertical stiffening members d. The members e are similar in construction to the spars. The members h are arranged two. in the plane of each pair of opposed webs in each bay; alternatively, or in addition, members h may extend from the comer of one bay to the opposite corner of the next bay. Alternatively the spars and cross members may be of sheet, and the diagonal members h of tubular metal. The flanges of the spars and cross members may be formed integrally by pressing them from sheets of metal and the units thus formed connected together by the webs. More than two spars may be employed. When the wing is formed in three portions the centre section may be similar in construction to the outer wing sections or may be constructed as a large box spar or girder to enable passengers, luggage or fuel to be accommodated. Hinges are described which are placed at the ends of the rear spars and are so inclined to the centre line of the spar section that the wings are clear of the ground in the folded position. The centre section may pass above, below, or through the fuselage. According to the Provisional Specification the wings may be arranged to fold forwards in which case the hinges are placed at the ends of the front spars.
