Winding-machines.- In a machine for winding conical packages of yarn b, Figs. 1 and 2, of the kind wherein the package is supported on a narrow friction driving-member e which is made to contact only with the portion of the spool receiving the thread so that the latter will be continuously taken up at a constant speed, the member e is arched transversely and is traversed together with the thread-guide h relatively to the package b. The roller-member e is mounted by trunnions f , f<1> on the traverse rail g, the guide h being carried on the bracket f<1>. The roller e is driven by frictional contact with a rotary drum d or is mounted directly on the shaft c which is then axially reciprocated. In a modification, the driving-member consists of a helical strip d<1>, Fig. 4, on a drum e<1>, the guide h being mounted on the traverse rail g to which is secured a parallel rail g<1> carrying a roller i<1> engaging a cam groove m in a cylinder n, the groove m corresponding in shape to the strip d<1> so that the guide h is normally opposite that part of the strip d' in contact with the spool. To stagger successive thread convolutions relatively to one another the groove m may be gradually displaced angularly relative to the strip d<1>, the cylinder n being coupled to the shaft c by a sleeve o slidably feathered there on and controlled by a slide t which is reciprocated by an eccentric u driven by a worm v and wormwheel w from the shaft c. The sleeve o enters a recess in the end of the cylinder n and is provided with diametrically opposite rollers p engaging oblique slots s in or secured to the cylinder n, the slots s on axial displacement of the sleeve o causing a rotary displacement of the cylinder n on the shaft c.
