Abstract
326,011. Elliott Optical Co., Ltd., and Green, W. Feb. 28, 1929. Eye instruments. - An instrument for exercising the eye, for the treatment of strabismus or phoria, shown in elevation in Fig. 1 and in part-sectional plan in Fig. 3, comprises a pair of pillars 23 each carrying a holder 27 for a lantern slide which is illuminated by an electric lamp in a casing 28 and viewed through a lens 25 and an interposed prism reflector (not shown). The pillars 23 are pivotally mounted at 22 on arms 20 themselves pivoted at 19 to the base plate 12 of the instrument, the pillars 23 being formed at their bases with discs 33 having pointers 34 adapted to move over scales 21 formed on the arms 20. Between the members 33 and 21 discs 35 are provided, freely rotatable upon the pivots 22 and having screws 37 projecting through arcuate slots 36 in the disc 35. Wing nuts 39 on the screws 37 allow the discs 35, 33 to be locked together. The discs 35 are formed with arms 40 carrying blocks 41 through which passes, a small-pitch screw 42, and on which are mounted a scale 43 and a pointer 44 respectively. The members 21 are similarly connected by a screw 46 with which cooperates a scale and pointer 47, 48. The screw 46 is restrained from longitudinal movement by collars 49 co-operating with a lug 50 on a pillar 51, the upper end of which carries an adjustable chin rest 53. Horizontal handles 32 are secured to the pillars 23, and the base plate 12 is supported on a portable block 10, being anchored thereto by a spring 18 and adjustable thereon by screws 13. The slide holders 27 may be provided with screws 30, 31 respectively permitting lateral and vertical adjustment of the slides. In use the screw 4G is set at the inter-pupillary distance of the patient, and the screw 42 manipulated until the images of the slides seen are fused; the pillars 23 are then connected together by screwing down the wing nuts 39 and are rotatably oscillated about their pivots through an angle of 20‹-25‹ as read on he scale 21, the eye being exercised by the effort of maintaining the fusion of the images. Subsequently the rocking may be carried out with initial adjustment of the images out of fusion, or such adjustment may be made during rocking by manipulating the screw 42.
