Abstract
325,956. Barr & Stroud, Ltd., and French, J. W. Jan. 22, 1929. Range - finders. - In stereoscopic observation instruments having in the field of view a stereoscopic image of the target which serves as a reference image to which a second stereoscopic image of the target is referred, the separation of the image may be variable in direction and/or magnitude and the magnification of the two images may be unequal. To form one of the images, rays from the target are reflected by prisms 53, 54 along the tube 52. On one side the rays pass through objective 9, prism 59, lens system 11, 61, 63 and 12 to the eye. A movable prism between lens 9 and prism 59 serves to change the apparent stereoscopic distance of the image. A corresponding prism may be present on the other side of the instrument which in other respects is exactly similar. The reference image, formed by rays through lenses 64, 65 may be deviated by prism 30, which may be displaced along the direction of the light path to vary the linear separation of the images and may be rotated to vary their angular separation. The reference image may also be formed as shown in Fig. 7 using a single lens 40. One half of the beam enters the prism 33 and after reflection by surfaces 36, 37 passes through the semi-silvered surface 4; the other half passes through prism 32 and a stereoscopic image is formed by the two beams.
