Abstract

325,613. Dengler, J. Dec. 4, 1928. Pottery, throwing and turning.-In the automatic manufacture of pottery a flat sheet of plastic material is formed by mechanism working automatically in timed relation to an intermittently-rotating table which delivers it to and presses it against the surface of a template on the table, the article thus formed being subsequently trimmed and finished, both pressing and finishing being carried out automatically and simultaneously at different points on the table so that one article is finished and delivered at each movement of the table. Clay is delivered from the conveyer 57, Fig. 1, to the hopper 58 and thence is delivered by an extrusion machine 48, Figs. 1 and 6, to a rotating spreading tool 50 which flattens it. The bat of clay is dropped on to one of the intermittently-rotated moulds 4 when the tool 50 is swung aside by gearing actuating the boss 54. A cam-actuated lever 55 maintains pressure between the tool and the material. As the mould-carrying table moves round, the bat of clay is brought underneath the wiping device shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and is pressed against the surface of the mould and smoothed by the pressure-moistened and spring-armed sponge 12 which moves between the dotted and full-line position for this purpose. A wire-cutter 29 trims the lower edge of the bat during this time. At the moulding stage, two curved knives 36, 37, Fig. 5, co-operate to form the bead of the supporting rim and a further wire 39 trims the lower edge of the article: a spraying nozzle 42 moistening the material during the process. In a modified arrangement, the batpressing mechanism is arranged vertically and the lumps of clay are delivered to it by hand.
