Abstract

Mounting and securing spare wheels on vehicles. - Means for attaching spare wheels to motor vehicles are arranged in combination with the door of a luggage or other compartment at the rear of the body, or in combination with any other part of the body work, such means being operable only at the inner side of the door or other part of the body work, so as to be protected against unauthorized manipulation. In the form shown in Fig: 1, a spare wheel c is mounted on the door a of a luggage compartment b by means of a bolt d passing through the centre of the wheel and through the door, its outer end being provided with a retaining-plate g engaging the boss h of the wheel, and its inner end with a wing nut f. Rotation of the bolt d is prevented by a squared portion d<1> engaging a square hole in an abutment plate i. A block e surrounding the bolt d engages the usual aperture in the centre of the wheel. In a mounting for a wire wheel, the hub of the wheel is engaged by a spigot on a distance piece attached to the door a &c., and the retaining-bolt passes through the hub flange, the distance piece, and the door. When the retaining bolt passes through the vehicle body, its inner end and the nut thereon may be enclosed by a cover which can be secured by a lock and key.
