Abstract

325,252. Evans, J. W. Oct. 15, 1928. Casements ; frames ; glazing. - Sheet-metal windows and window frames, including casements and casement frames, are made by pressing, drawing, stamping, or rolling two complementary seamless sheets, which form the front and rear halves of the window or frame, which halves are united by bending or pressing overlapping flanges into engagement without splitting, cutting, or notching, or the application of brazing, welding, or like processes; or the window or frame may be made by forming the front and back halves in one sheet, one half of which is doubled back on to the other half upon a line which corresponds to an edge of one of the vertical members of the window or frame, the two parts being joined by overlapping flanges which are bent or pressed into interlocking engagement. The sash-bars, mullions, and transoms are formed integrally with the half-sheets. The sash-bars, stiles, and rails of the window are provided with means, such as are described in Specification 324,928, to anchor the putty used for glazing. Hinge parts may be formed integral with the metal sheets, and also lugs for casement stays, window fasteners, and the like. Fig. 2 illustrates in horizontal section a two-part window A, according to the invention, fitted into a one-part frame B. The frame comprises outer and inner flanges 15, 16, and a rectangular opening 11. The window or casement comprises outer and inner parts 17, 19 united by pressing down continuous overlapping flanges 18, 20. The horizontal and vertical sash bars p, q are pressed or drawn from the same outer metal sheet 17 and, in the example shown, have pressed-out tongues 10 to retain the putty by which the glass is secured in the lights. The edges of the window or casement may be of trough formation all round, as shown in Fig. 2, to exclude rain &c. Fig. 4 shows a portion of a two-part window or casement 25, 28 hinged to a two-part frame 21, 22. The two window parts are interlocked by turned-over flanges, as at 26 and j, and the hollow stiles may enclose a channel-iron or wooden insertion 45. The hinge eyes are formed by bending tongues s, t pressed up from the metal sheets, 21, 25. Specification 321,228 also is referred to..
