Abstract

325,236. Momsen, C. B., Tibbals, C. L., and Hobson, F. M. Nov. 9. 1928. Respirators.-For restoring normal breathing when ascending from depths, as from submerged craft, a self-contained breathing apparatus is donned by the person, a line is floated extending from the submerged craft to a surface float and having stops along the line, and the person ascends the line resting at the successive stops for periods necessary for decompression of the body at those depths. A rubber &c. inflatable bag 15 has mounted within it a receptacle 16 containing a carbon dioxide absorbent material such as soda. lime. A nipple 18 leading from the receptacle 16 is connected to the inhaling tube 46 and another nipple 26 leading from the bag is connected to the exhaling tube 47, the tubes 46, 47 being connected to a valve casing 49 with inhaling and exhaling valves 66, 67 and having a. branch 72 carrying the mouth piece 51. The latter is of rubber and provided with a plate 74 to engage the outside. of the lips, a plate 75 to engage between the lips and the teeth, and a dome 77 to fit the roof of the mouth with lateral wings providing a bite for the teeth, no head straps being necessary to hold the mouth piece in place. The bag is provided with a vent valve 56 consisting of rubber sheets 58, 59 vulcanized together along the edges and slit at the sides at 60. The valve is connected to the bag by a length of flexible pipe 55, and may be let down to different, depths below the bag to control the excess of internal pressure in the bag over the external pressure on the bag. A nose. clip 53 is tied to the valve casing 49. The breathing apparatus is attached to the person by shoulder straps 31, belt straps 33, and leg straps 42 with trouser clips 45, and has a side clip 34 with oxygen bottle 35. The bag of the breathing apparatus is filled from the submarine compressed air tanks 88 by means of the valve 28, and during the ascent air escapes from the vent valve 56 as the external water pressure diminishes. When the surface is reached the cut off valve 50 between the valve casing 49 and mouth piece 51 is closed to enable the bag to be used as a float.
