Abstract

325,196. Jevons, W. H., and Norton, F. D. Nov. 5, 1928. Addition to 311,432. Driving.-Relates to mechanism as claimed in the parent Specification for rewinding the driving spring or springs of a gramophone or the like, by opening the lid of the casing, power being transmitted from the lid through one or more cords or cables. According to the invention, the cords are indirectly connected to the lid, through a lever or levers, or through gearing adapted to operate drums on which the cords are wound. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which two levers i (only one of which is shown) are fixed to the lid j and pass through the axis of the hinge. j<1>. To the outer end of each lever is connected a cord h, which passes over pulleys k and is wound over a shaft or drum d One end of a driving spring or springs is or are attached to the shaft or drum d, or to a drum or drums e secured thereto, the other end being attached to a fixed bracket f or the equivalent. The drive is transmitted to the turntable shaft a through a oneway clutch and gearing g. The arrangement is such that the cords h are drawn off the member d when the lid is raised, thus winding up the driving spring or springs. As the machine is driven, the cords are wound back upon the drum d. Tensioning means may be provided to keep the cords taut whilst the machine is working. A modification is described (Figs. 2 - - 5, not shown), in which the levers to which the cords are attached are not secured directly to the lid, but are pivoted to the back of the machine casing, the levers being connected to the lid by links. In this construction, the axis of the spring drum, and the drum or hollow shaft on which the cords are wound, are arranged vertically. Tension springs for counterbalancing the lid are connected by cords passing over pulleys to the operating levers. Fig. 6 shows a further modification, in which instead of levers being provided to operate the winding cords h, these pass from the drum d to a second drum d<1> having teeth with which quadrants w mounted on the lid j gear. The drum d<1> is thus rotated, when the lid is raised, to draw the cords on to it, and wind up tha driving spring; closing the lid reverses the rotation of the drum d<1> and allows the cords to hang loosely. A base weight, or a foot board, may be provided on the cabinet, to prevent tilting of the machine during rewinding.
