Abstract

325,194. Shannon, D. M., and Fiat British Auxiliaries, Ltd. Nov. 1, 1928. Pistons.-In a piston in which the depending portion C, Fig. 8, of the head is made of tapered cross-section, the flow of heat to the upper packing-ring grooves is obstructed by means of plane or inclined grooves D<2>, or by means of cylindrical grooves cut in the piston crown. The grooves may be filled with insulating material. The axes of the grooves may be eccentric to the piston axis, in order to secure a greater flow of heat to the side of the piston which is pressed against the cylinder wall during the working stroke. Instead of grooves, rows of holes may be employed, or a hollow space E<2>, Fig. 6, may be cast in the piston head. The core used in casting this space may be removed in the usual manner, or may be of insulating material, which is left in position. Alternatively, the space may open to the periphery of the piston, as shown, and be covered by a shrunk-on ring d<1> having a shoulder d<2> to prevent displacement. The head A<1>, Fig. 8, may be separate from the skirt A<2>, and be formed of nickel steel, or other metal having a low coefficient of expansion.
