Abstract

324,671. Hutchinson, W. V. Oct. 31, 1928. Ladders.-Fire-escape ladders of the flexible type and in which the rungs are nested, when the ladders are out of use, within a frame having slotted side members, has a crossbar 5 fitted to the frame to engage the sides of a window frame and support the upper end of the ladder. The rod may be telescopic and provided with projections to engage the window frame. The bottom ends of the frame may be pointed so that, after the ladder has been discharged thrcugh the window, the frame can be drawn in and the points placed on the floor of the room support the frame in upright, position. The upright sides of the frame are connected by cross-bars 9, which serve as means for climbing from the inside of the room to the ladder. In the case of long ladders, two or more slotted frames may be secured to the cross-bar. The rungs 14 are secured to the flexible sides 15 by means of soft metal sleeves 16 pressed into close engagement with the flexible sides. A storage box 30 for the ladder may be provided, having slots for the reception of the cross-bar and provided with a lid 32. Interengaging or overlapping side bars 18 may be provided on some of the rungs to act as stays to support the ladder away from the wall.
