Abstract

324,647. Marks, Sir G. C., (Universal Power Shovel Co.). Aug. 27, 1928. Excavating; scoop - arm machines. - Control mechanism for power shovels, cranes, and the lile comprises a plurality of driven members and of driving means therefor, and a single manually-operated controlling means movable in different ways and when moved in each of the said ways controlling the driving of one of said driven members through a direct mechanical connection and a connecting or clutch means, the control member being operable to cause the driving of said driven members one at a time or two or more at a time. As shown, a motor 62 constantly drives gears 63, 37<1>, 37, 47, 51, 53, 52, 61, 54, the gears 53, 54 rotating in opposite directions. Bevel gears 38, 39 are adapted to be clutched respectively to the gears 37', 37 and act through bevel gear 42 and a pinion 45 engaging an internal gear 46 to rotate the turn-table 23 of the machine. A hoist drum 48 is adapted to be clutched to the gear 47 and a loose sleeve 55 is adapted to be clutched to either of the gears 53, 54. The sleeve 55 carries a sprocket 58 for operation of the crowding mechanism of a dipper excavator while semicircular members 59, 60 may be fixed between flanges on the sleeve to form a drum when the machine is to be used otherwise than as a dipper excavator. Clutches, friction.-Each clutch comprises a disc 49, Fig. 6, attached to the driven member and adapted to be clamped between a plate 50 and the driving-gear on operation of pivoted fingers 71. These fingers are secured to an axially-slidable plate 68 provided with wedge projections co-operating with like recesses in a member 65 ; this member 65 normally rotates hut may be restrained by a brake band 72, whereupon the wedge projections tend to move out of the recesses and thereby cause the clutch to be engaged. Operating or controlling clutches.- All the clutches are controlled by a single hand-wheel 86 on a shaft 84 carrying a pulley 85 by which it is held against longitudinal motion in a yoke 83 which :is pivoted to an arm 81 carried by a rock shaft 80. Arms 88, 89 on the rock shaft are connected by links 93, 90 to the brake bands controlling the clutches for the sleeve 55, these clutches being operated by rocking the shaft 80. A bracket 87 on the shaft 84 is connected by a cable 96 passing over suitable guide sheaves to the brake band controlling the clutch for the hoist drum 48, this clutch being controlled by moving the shaft 84 about the pivots of the yoke 83. A cable 100 passes over the pulley 85 and over suitable guide pulleys, its ends being connected to the brakes controlling the clutches for the bevel gears 38, 39, these clutches being operated by rotating the hand-wheel 86.
