Burnishing by compression. - A rotary polishing roll, for use in shoe manufacture, especially immediately after pounding-up, is heated bv friction members which concentrically embrace the ends of the roll outside the working surface. The roll 2 is carried on the shaft 1 of the pounding drum. Friction bands 3 embrace the ends of the roll, the amount of friction, and, therefore, of heat produced, being adjustable by screws 7. The friction bands are secured to a fixed bar 5.
