Paper and like bags, folding down mouths of after filling.-Apparatus for closing the end of a carton &c. by folding over the open mouth a flap contiguous with one of the sides and bending over and tucking in between the opposing carton side and the contents a tab disposed along the free edge of the strip, comprises mechanism for bulging one side away from the contents and a tucking finger movable in synchronism with folding means for the flap to insert the tab in the bulge. Filled cartons are moved intermittently along a channel 25, Fig. 7, by a conveyer 27 and pass beneath a. plough 28 which turns upwards the closure flap 21, Fig. 1, against a fixed abutment 29 preparatory to an oscillating tab folder 30 bending over the tab portion 22; a semicircular cover 31 then retains the tab in its bent over position while the plough 28 turns the flap over the mouth of the carton. The tab folder 30 is mounted on a bracket 33 and, as the tab folder moves back, a pressure element 32 on the bracket slightly compresses the contents beneath the tab 22. After the next forward movement of the conveyer 27, forked grippers 39 on the bracket 33 engage the sides of the carton with their tapered ends and compress them, causing the side of the carton beneath the tab 22 to bulge outwards and allow a folding member 40 to fold down the flap 21 as a tucking member 41 tucks the tab 22 between the contents and the bulged side, the carton being held in position by locating members mounted on the folding member 40. The flap folding member 40 is pivoted on an arm 42 linked at its other end to a standard 45 and adapted to be drawn downwards by a link 47 and lever 48 pivoted on a shaft 49, its movement being controlled by a radius rod 100 and the engagement of an extension 53 of the folder 40 with a roller 54 on the machine frame. The tab tucker 41 is similarly mounted. The conveyer 27 moves across the path of' the cartons into its operative position, then along the path to transport the cartons, out from the path in a direction reverse to its first direction, and finally back, parallel to the path to its first position. This is effected by mounting it on bell crank levers 64, 65, Fig. 9, the opposite arms 66, 67 of which are linked together, the levers being mounted on a frame 71 connected to the main frame of the machine by a parallel link motion comprising levers 76, 89. The lever 76 is connected by a spring (not shown) to an arm 82 which is oscillated by a cam 84 to move the frame 71 in the direction of the path of the cartons, a lever 91 operated by a cam 93 rocking the bell crank levers to effect the transverse movements of the conveyer.
