Abstract

324,350. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 20, 1928. Acyclic hydrocarbons; cyclic hydrocarbons.- Mixtures of hydrocarbons having closely adjacent boiling points and different degrees of saturation are separated into their constituents by fractional distillation under normal, increased, or reduced pressure with the addition, prior to or during the distillation, of one or more of the following organic solvents :- ethylene chlorhydrin, glycol monacetate or diacetate, glycol monomethyl ether, glycerin di- or tri-acetate, lactic acid nitrile, diethyl tartrate, furfurol, or aromatic bases such as aniline, toluidine, or phenyl hydrazine. The addition of one of these substances causes the more saturated hydrocarbons to distil over first. The process may be applied to substances normally liquid and also to those liquefiable under pressure. In an example a mixture of cyclohexane and benzene is mixed with ethylene chlorydrin and distilled; practically pure cyclohexane distils off, leaving the benzene in solution in the ethylene chlorhydrin. In another example a mixture containing butadiene and alpha-butylene is mixed with ethylene chlorhydrin and distilled under pressure; the first fraction is mainly alpha-butylene, followed by 98 per cent of butadiene.
