Annealing; cementation.-In a process of reducing, or preventing the formation of, oxide coatings during the heat treatment of metallic goods in an electric or other furnace, a mixture of nitrogen or other inert gas and hydrogen is supplied to the heating part of the furnace and is of such low hydrogen content, viz., 2-15 per cent, and the volume of gas supplied is so predetermined that, during the deoxidation of the goods, the whole or practically the whole of the hydrogen is used up or taken out of the atmosphere. The goods after their progress through, or removal from, the heating chamber are thus cooled down in an atmosphere of nitrogen or one which contains a negligible amount of hydrogen. The goods may be passed intermittently through preheating, heating, and cooling chambers, the gas being supplied to the heating chamber in a continuous or intermittent stream. For hotrolled nickel sheets an atmosphere containing 2 per cent of hydrogen is used. Specification 132/11 is referred to.
