Abstract

323,150. Coleman & Sors, Ltd., T., and Coleman, F. Feb. 18, 1929. Sand and like distributers.-Apparatus for distributing grit or sand on roads &c. comprises a hopper mounted on a wheeled frame and delivering material on to a rearwardly extending trough mounted near its forward end on a vertical spindle on which is a crank or arm connected by mechanism to the road wheels in such a manner that the spindle is alternately turned in opposite directions through a limited angle to cause the rear end of the trough to he reciprocated or oscillated in a lateral direction. The hopper a may be mounted on a two-wheeled frame provided with an adjustable draw-bar b for attachment to a towing hook on a lorry or other vehicle. The trough g is horizontal and is carried by a vertical spindle h provided with an arm j connected by a universally jointed rod k to a crank on a countershaft m which is driven through a chain o and clutch p. The trough has a flat bottom, raised sides, and a substantially semi-cylindrical front wall q concentric with the spindle h. It tapers inwardly towards the rear and then widens to a scoop-shaped terminal part r provided with slits or openings s. An adjustable transverse plate t extends upwardly through the bottom to control the rate of flow. Beyond this plate is an opening w normally closed by a plate x which may be removed and secured at the end by wing nuts z when tbe sand &c. is to be distributed in narrower widths.
