Fatty acids.-Unsaturated long chain fatty acids are prepared by distilling the crude oxidation products, containing hydroxycarboxylic acids, of paraffin and the like waxes. The mixture of acids may be hydrogenated to saturated acids for the production of solid edible fats. The distillation is carried out at atmospheric or reduced pressure and at such a high temperature that the said unsaturated acids collect in the distillate and if desired in the presence of steam or inert gases. If desired a catalyst such as red phosphorus, sulphuric acid, or metal oxides may be employed as a distillation. Unoxidized products may be removed from the crude oxidation products by mechanical pressure or sweating. In examples, the oxidation products obtained from hard paraffin wax are distilled in a vacuum at 110‹ to 280‹ C. and the distillate is redistilled in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The oxidation products from montan wax, beeswax, ozokerite and the like may be similarly treated. An oxidation product of soft paraffin wax of brown coal tar is distilled while passing through a current of steam and raising the temperature to 260‹ C. The oxidation product of liquid paraffin wax or of montan wax may be similarly treated.
