Abstract

322,279. Francis, L. J. Oct. 8, 1928. Printing processes. - A representation of the grain of an expensive wood is printed on a cheaper wood, or other fibrous or porous material, such as asbestos, by applying to the surface to be printed a foundation coating comprising gelatine, albumen, or other colloidal substance, together with a hardening-agent therefor, and printing with a greasy ink by means of a halftone block prepared from a photograph of the expensive wood. The impression may be offset on to an indiarubber-covered blanket or roller which is applied to the surface in a printing-machine. The foundation coating, which may, if desired, be coloured, may comprise (1) a solution of gelatine, chrome alum, glacial acetic acid, and methylated spirits; (2) a solution of gelatine, a washable distemper, and formaldehyde; (3) albumen and potassium bichromate.
