Abstract

322,264. Du Belle, C. S. Sept. 18, 1928. Inking-apparatus.-Inking-apparatus for handstamps, numbering-machines, and other printing- machines is provided with a reservoir roller comprising two telescopically-connected tubular members each provided with a number of minute orifices in its wall, the orifices in one member being normally out of register with those in the other and adapted to be brought into register therewith bv imparting relative axial movement to the members so that ink is conveyed to a cylindrical body of absorbent ink-permeable material surrounding the outer tubular member. The invention is described more particularly in connection with a hand-stamp described in Specification 322,263. In one form the reservoir roller F. Fig. 10, mounted within bearings in the side plates E<1> of the oscillatory frame of the handstamp referred to, comprises inner and outer tubular members f, f<1> each open at one end and closed at the other, either or both of the closed ends being provided with a filling-aperture closed by a screwed stopper f<2>. The inner member f is provided with a screw-threaded axial extension f<8> which projects through the side plate E<1> of the supporting-frame and carries a circular nut f<9> provided with flanges f<10>, f<11>. A shoulder f<16> on the Range f<11> is engaged by a flange on a disc f<17> which is secured on the plate E<1>, thereby limiting the nut f<9> to rotary movement only. Longitudinal movement is imparted to the inner tubular member f by rotating the nut f<9>, and the member f is held with its apertures either in or out of register with those of the member f<1> by means of a semi-circular locking-device f<12>, Fig. 11, pivoted between the flanges f<10>, f<11> and provided at one end with a pipe f<13> adapted to extend through a radial aperture in the nut into a recess in the extension f<8> of the member f. A bowed spring f<15> on the other end of the member f<12> normally holds the locking-pin f<13> in engagement. The absorbent covering F<1> of the reservoir roller comprises a solid cylindrical body mounted on a perforated tubular member F<2> provided with end flanges F<3> against which flanges f<3> on the members f, f<1> abut. Rotation of one tubular member relatively to the other is prevented by a pin f<11> on the inner member f engaging within a longitudinal slot in the member f<1>. In a modification, Fig. 5, the absorbent body comprises a series of discs held together by a bolt or bolts connected between end-plates f<4>, a pin f<6> being provided to prevent rotation of the discs relatively to the outer tubular member f<1>. Relative longitudinal movement is imparted to the tubular members f, f by a lever R pivoted in a lug on the adjacent supporting-plate E and bifurcated at one end to engage within a groove r in an extension of the inner member f, a spring S at the other end of the lever serving normally to hold the member f in its inner position to cut off the ink supply to the felt roller. A pivoted detent T is provided to engage and hold the end of the lever R against the pressure of the spring to maintain the supply of ink during printing. The reservoir roller may apply ink directly to the types or type-wheels, or an inking-roller N, Fig. 4, may be provided, with or without an intermediate distributing-roller G. Rotary movement is imparted to the rollers of the inking-apparatus by providing them with interengaging gear-wheels driven by a ratchet-wheel on the roller N, which engages a pawl on the frame of the hand-stamp and is fed by the movement of the occillating- frame E.
