Fatty oils, sulphuretted soaps, processes for making.-Fats and fatty acids are treated at elevated temperature and under reduced or atmospheric pressure, and in the absence of water, with alkali metals, their oxides or hydroxides, with or without an alkaline earth peroxide to yield saponaceous compounds to be used as such or in the form of an aqueous emulsion in the manufacture of soap, varnish, linoleum, or, after vulcanization, as a substitute for rubber. The reaction mass may be treated with radiations, e.g. X-rays, or with gases, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and may be vulcanized by alternate treatment with sulphur dioxide and sulphuretted hydrogen, or by a separate vulcanization treatment with or without accelerators, e.g. triphenyl guanidine, or activators, e.g. zinc oxide. The dissolution of the alkali or alkali metal may be promoted by addition of such metal-free organic materials as for example phenols, arylamines, hydrocarbons, ketones, or alcohols. Fillers and pigments may be added. In examples, linseed. fish, castor, rape, olive, or sunflower oil is heated in vacuo or at atmospheric pressure with sodium oxide, lithium hydroxide, sodium or potassium hydroxide, or metallic potassium, with added barium peroxide or p-cresol. The product on cooling is heated with sulphur, zinc oxide and triphenylguanidine. Specification 321,722 is referred to.
