Abstract

321,397. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Windram, A. H. A. July 5, 1928. Work supports, outsole sewing; feed by needles; perforating devices.- In a machine for sewing material, e.g. the thin leather, round the mouth of a suit-case or the like made of fibre, means are provided for clamping the material firmly to the bag while sewing and for imparting a pull away from the mouth of the bag. The invention is described as applied to a Puritan type of sewing machine. The bag 43, with its steel reinforcing frame 47 and layer of thin material 45 is placed on the work support 5 with the layer 45 pulled tightly over the edge. The work is guided by the abutment of the frame 47 on the face of the work support 5. The machine is started and the awl 9 descends to puncture the work. The awl ascends and the barbed needle 1 ascends to enter the puncture and to have a loop of thread placed in its hook by the looper 11. The needle is reciprocated by the arm 3. After the needle is raised, an arm 17 carrying a foot 19 is also raised. The foot 19 engages the under side of the layer 45 and by reason of the bevelled engagement between its side face 24 and the back of the work support, it tensions the layer away from the mouth of the bag, rocking about its pivot 26 against the action of the spring plunger 39. Its rocking movement is limited by the stops 29, 41.
