Abstract

321,147. Kings Patent Agency, Ltd., (Phillips, W. B.). June 29,1928. Supplying consuming devices from variablespeed generators.- In electric lighting systems for railway and like vehicles in which one of a number of wires extending throughout the system serves for the energization or control of the main switches, this wire serves also for the supply of current, under automatic control, to external lighting circuits. In a 5-wire system, Fig. 1, in which internal lights are switched on and off by electromagnetic switches energized by currents from " on " and off" wires running from carriage to carriage, the on " wire is also used to supply external embarkation lights so that additional wiring between carriages is not required for such supply. The five wires a - - e, Fig. 1, between carriages serve respectively as positive paralleling main, " off " wire, negative main, " on " wire and lights main. Two batteries 2, a change-over switch 4, a cut-in 3, a resistance 6 and a hand-control switch 11 for applying the control impulses to the wires b, d are provided as usual. When the switch 11 is operated by the guard to switch on the lights 7, the " on " main and so the coil f of the switch 5 is energized. The core 19 rises, first closing the lights circuit at 5<1> and energizing the holding coil g, and then breaking the circuit of the coil f at 18 by a blade 17 operated with a time-lag by spaced lock-nuts on a spindle connected to the core 19. As the core 19 rises, a circuit is also closed at 16 to connect the wires d, e through an auxiliary switch 4<1> on the changeover switch 4 so that the external lights 8 then light whenever the train slows down. As the " on " wire d of lighted carriages is energized, all the switches 5 of separate carriages must operate and the lights of extra carriages coupled on will be automatically switched on without operation of the corresponding switch 11. A coil of the switch 5 may be energized through the main b from the switch 11 to lower the core 19 and switch the lights 7 off. Fans 9 may be provided. In a modification, Fig. 5, the main switches are of the type, with " on " and " off " coils only and screws 25, 26 on an arm 29 on the main switch brush 28 operate an auxiliary switch brush 27 with a time-delay. Movement of the brush 27 from the contact 23 to the contact 24 breaks the circuit of the " on " coil and establishes the supply to the " on " wire.
