Abstract

Making netting. - In machines for making wire netting by twisting the wires together while they are held at the centre of pinions or between semi-pinions the untwisted sides of the meshes are formed by drawing the wire against raised triangular faces of the same length on a roller. The wires are fed through the machine by an intermittently-operated mesh roller provided with a series of spaced bars 15 having staggered triangular projections 16, the end projections being grooved to engage selvedge wires. The wires are drawn through a pair of guides 36 which are slidable in opposite directions across the mesh to bring together different pairs of wires successively. The pairs of wires are engaged by pairs of half-pinions 28 carried by shrouds 27 which are moved apart so as to free the wires and then across the mesh in the same direction so as to position them opposite the different pairs of wires successively and then moved together. One set of half-pinions has a central projection and the other a corresponding recess, which cooperate to form a double twist when the pinions are rotated. The separating motion is effected' by wedge bars 31 operated by links from a rock shaft and the closing motion by springs 29, 30. The shrouds are moved across the mesh by a cam operated rod 35 and slotted member 34. Oiio of the shrouds contains a rack 26 for rotating the pinions. the rack being operated by a reciprocating rod 21 pivoted to a slidable bar 22 which is connected to an arm 23 capable of sliding in a fork 25 attached to the rack so as to allow the rack to move laterally during the operating and closing motion. The divided pinions may be replaced by pinions with openended slots and projections, in which case a single shroud only is used, slotted to accommodate the pairs of wires.
