Pleating.-In a device for forming pleats in material in the direction in which relative movement occurs between the device and the material, a pair of grooved co-operating surfaces form upstanding pleats which are guided into inclined slots for overturning said pleats after which they may be pressed flat. One form of the invention is shown in Fig. 2 in section and in Fig. 3 in plan as seen from below. The device comprises a part 11 over which the fabric passes and a part 10 with an extension 17 under which the fabric passes. To the part 11 is attached a roll 13 and to the part 10 a roll 12, the two rolls having complementary interengaging surfaces for forming the pleats. A sole plate 23 terminates in bent-up fingers, which project between recesses in the roll 12 and serves to lead the pleats into appropriate slots 21 in a guide member 19. A plate 20 with inclined slots 21 turn the pleats over and they may be flattened by an iron. The iron is mounted on a plate 15 and is retained in position thereon by shaped gripping parts 29 of the part 10. The guide member 19 and plate 20 may be replaced by a single unit. In operation the device is either moved longitudinally of the cloth or the latter is pulled through the device. The guiding and turning over device may be arranged with slots inclined in any direction and in one form shown in Fig. 9 one set of slots 35 is arranged oppositely to another set 35<1> on the same turning over member 32. When used in the production of box pleats this results in separating oppositely set pleats.
