Mineral waxes.-Wax-like bodies are obtained by treating montan wax which has been bleached by a solution of an oxidizing agent, or the conversion products of such wax, with oxygen or gases containing oxygen, may be in presence of catalysts, and may be mixed with oily, fatty, resinous, or waxy substances. The free carboxyl groups of the products may be partially or wholly esterified, e.g. with glycol, polyglycol or butylene glycol, converted into amides, anhydrides, or other compounds containing the -CO-group, or combined with one or more bases, e.g. lime or baryta. Montan wax conversion products specified for treatment are those obtained according to Specifications 296,145, 305,552, 308,996, 315,283 and 324,631. Additions specified are solid or liquid hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, e.g. paraffin oil or wax, colophony, and vegetable or animal oils, fats or waxes, and their components, e.g. castor oil, wool grease, stearin, and fatty acids from cocoanut oil or wool fat. These additions may be wholly or partially subjected to the above treatment separately, and be added to the partially or fully treated montan wax. For example, 80 kg. of a montan wax product obtained according to Specification 308,996, is mixed with 25 kg. of paraffin wax, 10 kg. of bleached fatty acids from wool fat, and 0.1 kg. of barium cinnamate, and subjected at 160-180‹ C. to an air blast for 2 hours; 100 kg. of the product is heated with 20 kg. of polyglycol for 3 hours at 120-130‹ C. The product resembles Japan wax. Or montan wax which has been highly bleached by chromic acid solution is treated at 160‹ C. during 1 hour with 500 litres of air per kg. of wax blown in at the bottom of the cylindrical container through fine nozzles. A wax which is kneadable and plastic at 35‹ C. is produced.
