Round holes, enlarging and trueing; rotating-tool apparatus. -A cylinder grinder is provided with means for effecting radial adjustment of a number of grinding-stones so as to vary the grinding diameter during the operation. The body 1 is bored to receive a shaft 5 carrying a pair of cones 3, 4, which coact with pins 34 on the grinding- stones 33, the shaft 5 being screwed into the lower cone so that rotation of the shaft varies the distance between the cones to adjust the grinding diameter. The upper end of the body is slotted to receive a driving member 10 whose upper end has a floating connection with a head 12 having a shank 43 driven by a chuck 44 and is retained therein by a pivoted member 16 mounted in a member 18 keyed to the head 12. The member 18 is fitted with stop 22. A sleeve 24 rotatable on the head 12 carries a gear ring 26 connected through an idler 27 to a gear 29 through which passes a square extension 32 of the shaft 5. The sleeve is provided with a toothed rim 36 coacting with teeth 38 on a ring 37 which may be moved longitudinally and then adjusted around the sleeve. The lower end of the ring carries a projection coacting with the stop 22. The sleeve 24 is keyed to a drum 41 having a braking surface which may be engaged by a band brake 45 actuated by pinching together the arms 51. The brake band may be secured to a member 48 and a number of such members may be arranged along a tube 49 to form an assembly, Fig. 1, suitable for grinding out an engine cylinder block, which is mounted for vertical reciprocation over the grinding devices. In order to enable the grinders to enter the cylinders, the ring 37 is rotated back away from the stop 22, thus rotating the sleeve 24 to operate the shaft 5 and contract the head. During operation, the gears 26, 27, 29 rotate together and the shaft 5 is not actuated, but to expand the heads when required, the operator applies the brake 45 thus checking the sleeve 24 and gear ring 26. This causes the shaft 5 to be rotated so as to draw the cones together and move the grinding-stones outwardly. This radial adjustment may be continued by successive periodical operations of the braking- arms 51 until the projection 39 engages the stop 22 and prevents further relative movement between the sleeve 24 and head 12. The device may be set for different maximum and minimum diameters by adjusting the ring 37 in different angular positions on the toothed rim of the sleeve 24.
