Abstract
320,458. Amberton, R., and Walton, J. R. Aug. 17, 1928. Operating clutches and the like; controlling variable-speed gearing.-A step-bystep operative movement in either direction from a neutral position, with a free return, is imposed upon operating means for variable speed gears, clutches &c., by the provision thereon of oppositely acting pawls 15, 16, one or other of which, according to the direction of movement, is adapted to engage two sets of fixed teeth 4, 7, each of which comprises camming and arresting faces. The teeth may be formed on the walls 1, 3 of a cast ring adapted to be secured to the end cover of a casing &c. The pawls 15, 16 are formed by the bent ends of rods 13, 14, slidable in bearings 12 on a boss 10 secured to the control spindle 11, the pawl ends bearing against abutments 20 under the action of gravity or of springs 17, 19. Upon rotation in a counterclockwise direction, the pawl 15 rides up the inclined surfaces 5 of successive inner teeth 4, the motion being arrested at each step by the radial faces 9 of the other teeth 7, the pawl rotating in its bearing to allow free return. Clockwise rotation from neutral position is similarly regulated by engagement of the pawl 16 with the inclined faces 8 on the outer teeth and radial faces 6 on the inner teeth.
