Apparatus for making filaments; cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments from. -Cakes of viscose silk are freed from noxious gases or vapours before washing or drying, by passing air or other innocuous gas therethrough at a temperature of at least 50‹ C. Thus, the cakes 2, Fig. 1, may be superposed in a frame 1 with the interposition of plates 3 having each a central opening 4. A covering plate 5 is placed on the uppermost cake, and the frame is inserted in a closed box having an atmosphere of warm air preferably containing sufficient steam to prevent undue loss of moisture from the cakes. The warm air is drawn through the silk by a suction pipe 7. Alternatively, the silk 16, Fig. 2, may be treated in the spinning bowl 8, the bowl being closed by a cover 10 through which passes a tube 13 having perforations 14 through which warm air is forced from a connection 15. The air leaves the bowl through perforations 9, and to ensure uniform distribution, the perforations at the bottom of the tube 13 are made larger than those at the top. A prior proposal is referred to comprising the treatment of the fresh silk, in bobbin form, with steam and ammonia.
