Cash-drawer mechanism.-In a cash register or similar accounting machine having a plurality of cash drawers, corresponding keys in the single and multiple item groups of clerk's keys select the same drawer for release. In a multiple-item operation the drawer is selected but remains locked until a total is taken. The invention is shown as applied to a machine of the Shipley type described in Specifications 8119/15 and 227,861. The single and multiple item groups of clerk's keys are arranged, the former below the latter, in a single bank, and through the usual differential mechanism, shaft 99 and gearing 122, 123, 126, 127 serve angularly to position a vertical shaft 118 carrying release-arms 130 - - 135 for the cashdrawers. The arms are arranged in oppositely disposed pairs so that depression of a single-item key places one of the arms 131, 133, 135 in operative position beneath the pertinent drawer-latch 116, while depression of the corresponding multiple-item key sets the opposite arm 130, 132 or 134 beneath the same latch. The vertical or releasing movement of the shaft is derived from a cam on the main shaft through a pitman 151 and a pin 157 extending from a lever 145 freely rotatable on the shaft 99 and having two arms 143, 144 that engage within an annular groove 140 in the shafe 118. The connection between the pitman 151 and the pin 157 includes a lug 159 extending from a yoke 154 and abutting the end of an arm 158 of a bell crank 156 freely mounted in the pin 157. In a single-item operation, the arm 158 is maintained in operative position to permit the release of a drawer by the engagement of the other arm 166 of the bell crank with the raised part of a cam 167 fixed on the shaft 99. In a multiple-item operation, a reduced part 168 of the cam 167 allows the bell crank to rotate under the action of a spring 165 and the drawerreleasing mechanism is thereby disabled. In a total-taking operation, a second arm 169 disposed adjacent the cam 167 and having a raised part 170 is rocked by the total-taking mechanism to return the bell-crank to operative position and enable the release of a drawer.
