Abstract

318,906. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). June 8, 1928. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; compensating for wear. -In a duplex vehicle brake which comprises two brakes arranged side by side in the same drum and separated by a member 26, supporting common anchoring and applying means for both brakes, each brake comprises at least three juxtaposed elements 14, 16, 18, two of which 14, 16 are anchored on the support 26. The shoe 18 is pivoted by a free pivot to, and adapted to apply the shoe 16. The shoes 14, 16 overlap one another and the shoe 16 has a double web straddling the webs of the other two shoes. The fixed pivots comprise a pivot 42, Fig. 4, passing through bushes 44 shouldered and pressed into reinforcing plates 48 and carrying shoes 14. The shoes may be mounted directly on the pivot. The brake cams 74, 76 act on rollers 78 on the ends of and arranged at each side of the shoes, and have positioning ribs 80 fitting between the rollers. The cam 74 is carried on a shaft 90 mounted by a roller bearing 92 in bracket 94 mounted'in a slot in the support 26. The shaft 90 passes through a hollow shaft 88 carrying the cam 76 for the other brake and mounted in a bracket 86 in the cover plate 28 of the brake. The brackets 94, 86 are clamped to the supports 26, 28 by bolts and spring washers to allow the cams to centre themselves. The free pivot 60 of each brake is mounted with clearance in a member 64 pivoted and frictionally clamped to the support 26 to allow this pivot to adjust itself automatically. The surface of cam 76 which is tangent to the shaft 90 is cut away to clear this shaft. The bracket 94 is mounted in a radial slot in the support 26 to facilitate assembly. The brake is shown arranged on a full floating and also a semi-floating axle.
