Sheet and web clamping, guiding, and cutting arrangements; paper-supports.-A typewriter or like machine is provided with a single recording- mechanism for co-operating with any one of a number of flat platens which are movable independently to release or clamp the paper. The machine shown in Figs. 2 and 9 is provided with two platens 12, 13 each being, as described in Specification 317,915 associated with paper-clamps 15, 16, 25 and pedal mechanism for raising the clamps 25, 15 and depressing the platen at the rear so as to release the webs from the clamps 25, 15, 16 in succession, means also being provided for preventing release of either of the clamps 15 so that when two webs are arranged side-by-side on the same platen, one web can be clamped when the other is drawn forward. The clamps 25 have cutting-edges 26. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The above-described platens 12, 13, Figs. 2 and 9, are associated as described in the above-mentioned Specification with alternative carbon arrangements comprising carbon sheets mounted on a carriage, and transversely movable carbon webs 54, Fig. 9, carried by rollers 47, 48 arrarged at the sides of the framework and extending across both plattens. Instead of feeding the carbon webs, lengths may be drawn from both rollers and secured at the ends by means of clamps arranged between the platens, new lengths being drawn from either roll at intervals. The clamos may each consist of a spring strip 70 arranged in a channel 69 on a frame-bar 7, one end being pivoted and the other end being engaged by a sliding catch 73.
