Abstract

317,306. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 12, 1928. Hygrometric apparatus.-For measuring the humidity of gases by dew-point determination. the gas is passed over a cooled smooth surface which reflects the rays from a source of light &c. on to a, device the properties of which are affected by the rays, and the change in the said properties which occurs owing to a loss of reflecting power by the deposition of moisture on the said surface is utilized in conjunction with means for indicating the temperature of the surface in order to obtain a reading or record corresponding to the dew-point. Light from the source a is reflected by the cooled surface b on to the cell c which may be a photo-electric cell which is employed in conjunction with an amplifier to operate a relay g. An electric &c. thermometer d adjacent the surface b is connected to a measuring instrument h which is controlled by the relay so as to be disconnected when a film of moisture appears on the surface b and reconnected when the film disappears. A heating element e for the surface b may also be controlled by the relay simultaneously with the cooling means so that cooling is interrupted and the element e is energized when the film of moisture is formed, and conversely.
