Aug. 2, 1928, Opening by cutting.-Relates to openers comprising a rotary arm carrying an adjustable cutter, the arm being simultaneously given an axial movement by screw means, so that a drawing cut is produced. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 a supporting frame 1 carries a crank 13 which effects through gears 10, 11, 12 rotation of a gear-wheel 8 which supports a verticallymovable spring-controlled cutter 4, laterally adjustable by a screwed spindle 7. The tin 3 to be operated upon is held in a clamping device composed of levers 2, Fig. 2, pivoted to a ring 15 rotation of which, relative to a series of slotguides 16, by means of a crank 18, causes adjustment of the clamping levers in iris diaphragm fashion. In operation, the wheel 8 being lowered until the knife rests just above the tin, the cutter is driven in to the end by a blow on the knob 19 and held down by means of a catch 21. By turning the crank the cutter is rotated to out out the end at the same time gradually raised owing to the hub of the wheel 8 being mounted on the stationary screw-spindle 9. The cutter is freed from the catch after opening the tin, and the wheel 8 descends to its original position owing to the idle movement of pinion 10, which is driven only in one direction by the crank. The construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, intended particularly for removing the projecting edges of already opened tins, comprises a frame supporting a crank 29 turning a screwed spindle 28 carrying a rotary arm on which a cutter 31 is adjustably mounted. The cutter may be hookshaped or outwardly cranked, as shown. The tin is held in clamping-jaws 23, 24 held closed by fastening-means 25; a form is described in which adapter-rings may be inserted between the jaws and the tin to enable smaller tins to be treated.
