Abstract

Respirators. -A respiratory device for supplying warm air to a patient comprises a mask with a tube or tubes leading to the outer air. the tube or tubes being adapted to heat the air passing to the mask by radiation from the patient's body. As shown, the mask 1 comprises an outer rigid casing 1<d> and a removable lining 5 of rubber, cardboard or like resilient material, the lining having an inner lining 6 where it contacts with the face. The mask has a tubular extension 1<a> which receives an extension 5<a> of the mask, a tight joint being made by a beading or washer 5<b>. The inlet valve 7 and the outlet valve 8 are carried by the lining and the valve 8 is protected from damage by a bar 1<c> on the casing 1<d>. The mask is retained on the face by tapes or the like attached to hooks on the casing 1<d>. The projection 1<a> is connected by a tube. 2 to a chamber which receives air from a tube 3. The chamber 4 is placed under the bedclothes or under the clothes of a dressed patient and the air is thereby warmed. Either or both of the tubes may be coiled within the chamber, or the chamber may be dispensed with and a tube or tubes tied around the patients' waist. Alternatively, a coiled tube or tubes may be used. The edge of the mask which contact.s with the face may have V-shaped slits to produce a number of tongues which expand freely and prevent damage to the skin. A portion of the mask adjacent to the edge which contacts with the skin may be made of stretchable material and the edge itself may be bound with rubber. Alternatively, a spring may be incorporated in the edge to make it resilient.
