Abstract

316,838. Wade, H., (Miller, Inc., W. J.). Dec. 5, 1928. Delivering molten metal.-A feeder of the reciprocating plunger type is provided with means for bringing the plunger nearer to one side of the outlet, usually the side towards the tank, in order to compensate for the effect of variations in the temperature of the glass around the outlet. A device is also provided for indicating to the machine minder the spacing between the internal wall of the outlet and the lower end of the plunger. The feeder comprises a plunger 5 which reciprocates vertically above an outlet 3 in a forehearth 2, the construction of the feeder and the means for reciprocating the plunger being described in Specification 316,837. A shearing device 145, which cuts the issuing glass, is constructed and operated as described in Specification 318,063. The plunger is clutched to a screwed stem 7 which extends upwards through a loosely-fitting sleeve 8. Two nuts 10, above and below the sleeve 8, enable the stem to be adjusted vertically to raise or lower the plunger. The stem rotates on ball bearings within the sleeve and is connected by a universal joint to a shaft 112 which is rotated by a shaft 63, thus rotating the plunger to stir the glass in the forehearth. The sleeve 8 is mounted in gimbals in an opening 14 in a beam 15, so that the sleeve can be swung freely in the opening. The sleeve is connected rigidly to an arm 104 having an aperture which fits loosely over a fixed pin 105. A depending rod 106, rigidly secured to an arm 104, is so proportioned that its lower end bears the same relation to an adjustment cup 107 as the lower end of the plunger 5 bears to the outlet aperture 3. The lower end of the rod passes through a bracket 110, and bolts 111 enable the lower end of the rod to be adjusted in relation to the cup 107. The bolts thus enable the position of the lower end of the plunger to be adjusted in relation to the axis of the outlet 3. By moving it towards the side of the outlet at which the glass is hottest, the outflow of the hotter and more fluid glass can be retarded. The rod 106 can be arranged on either side of the machine.
