Abstract
316,795. Dallas, J. C., and Wilson, M. Sept. 4, 1928. Aerating.-An air lift for use in the activatedsludge process is arranged to discharge the liquid and sludge well above the liquid level so that it is further aerated as it falls in thin films or over screens or roughened or riffled surfaces. The air supply pipe 6, Fig. 9, passes down within the up-lift pipe 4, which has a distributor head, formed by plane or coned surfaces 36, 37, which may be provided with spiral vanes. The lower surface 36 is bent downwards at the outside, the inclined portion being provided with riffles 40 and preferably perforated. Fig. 1 shows four tanks A - - D, each provided with an air lift. The tanks A, B, are treatment tanks, the liquid passing from the tank A to the tank B through a pipe 9. The tank C is a settling tank receiving liquid from the tank B through pipes 9b, 11. Sludge which separates in the tank C is at intervals delivered by the air lift, which has no distributor head, through pipes 15, 16 to the tank D. The tank D is a sludge-aerating tank, from which the activated sludge is delivered through a pipe 19 to the tank A. Fig. 3 shows a special form of treatment tank, the side wall of which is concave, as shown, and merges into the conical bottom to which the air lift 4e extends. The treated liquid passes to an outlet 14<6> behind a baffle 20.
