Abstract
316.703. Graesser-Monsanto Chemical Works, Ltd., and Hudson, D. P. May 12, 1928. Hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acids ; p-hydroxybenzoic, salicylic, o-cresotinic and 5-methyl-6- hydroxy benzoic acids.-Isomeric or closely related aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acids are separated bv selective acidification of their alkali salts, or by selective neutralization of the free acids. Thus, the mixture of the acids may be fractionally dissolved in alkali solution, or a solution of the alkali salts of the acids mav be fractionally precipitated by a mineral acid, or the weaker acids may be displaced by the addition of a stronger free hydroxyaromatic acid. An immiscible solvent may be employed, in which the weaker acid is the more soluble. According to examples : (1) a by-product in the manufacture of salicylic acid, which contains the latter admixed with p-hydroxybenzoic acid is dissolved in caustic soda, and fractionally precipitated by means of sulphuric acid; the p-hydroxybenzoic acid being precipitated first; (2) a mixture of salicylic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids is boiled with less than the equivalent quantity of aqueous caustic soda; on cooling, p-hydroxy benzoic acid separates; (3) salicylic acid is used to displace phydroxybenzoic acid from a mixed solution of the two acids; (4) a by-product from the manufacture of o-cresotinic acid, which contains the latter mixed with 5-methyl-6-hydroxybenzoic acid is dissolved in alkali, and fractionally precipitated with acid; o-cresotinic acid being the first to separate. By making a preliminary test, the whole of the acid necessary to precipitate, completely, the weaker acid may be added at once.
