Abstract

Sprinklers, automatic.-In a sprinkler system of the dry pipe type, the air and water valves are connected by a pressure-multiplying lever system so that the size of the air valve may be reduced without increasing the air pressure. As shown, the water valve 17 is connected by a universal joint 25, 26 to a lever 30 which is connected to the air valve 19 by links 33 pivoted at 32, 34. In the ready position of the valves, the free end of the lever 30 is retained by a latching screw 35. The air-valve pivot 20, the pivots 34, 32, 26, and the latch 35 are relatively so arranged that the lever system produces a multiplying effect of four to one. The air valve is made somewhat larger than the water valve so that it will yield when the water pressure exceeds the air pressure by more than six to one. When this pressure ratio is exceeded, the water valve lifts at one, side, the latch 35 acting as a fulcrum. The air valve then turns on its pivot 20, withdrawing the end of the lever 30 from the latch 35, when the valves are free to open together. The valves are prevented from reclosing by a latch 48. The system is provided with a drain pipe 37 for the space between the valves, a drain 52 for the air side, and a drain 42 for the water side. Air is forced through the pipe 44.
