Abstract

316,478. Thew, W. Oct. 20, 1928. Percussive hand tools. - A dental or surgical hand hammering-tool comprises a solenoid F carried by a brass or like tube C<1> and supplied with an interrupted electric current so as to reciprocate a soft iron hammer D with a tip D<2> of vulcanized fibre against a spring E. The travel of the hammer may be varied by means of an interchangeable stop D<3>. By unscrewing the cap C the casing and tool B may be removed for sterilizing. Fig. 4 shows the connections for 'operating either of two such tools A by means of a change-over switch S and a foot-operated switch T, which closes simultaneously the circuit through the solenoid and the operating circuit of a motor Q which drives an interrupter R'. By means of a rheostat the speed of the motor and therefore of the hammering action may be varied. Separate switches may be provided for the motor circuit and the solenoid circuit, and a rheostat may be provided in the latter circuit to vary the force of the blow. Fig. 5 shows a slotted spring finger B<6> for retaining the tool.
