Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-The refining of petroleum distillates or other hydrocarbons is effected by liquid sulphur dioxide, acetone, or furfurol, and added low-boiling aromatic hydrocarbon. For example, 100 lb. of a spindle oil is first treated in countercurrent with 200 lb. of liquid sulphur dioxide, and then with a mixture of 200 lb. of liquid sulphur dioxide and 20 lb. of benzol. Specifications 6345/14 and 164,325 are referred to.
