Abstract

316,109. Peter, W. J. Jan. 21, 1928. Direct liquid-pressure apparatus.- Relates to hydraulic oil-storage and delivery systems for marine use comprising a plurality of symmetrically disposed tanks the filling and supplying of which are controlled by means of centrally-located oil and water manifolds. The vessel is equipped with wing tanks 1, 2, 7, 8, Fig. 1, and bottom tanks 3, 4 the latter provided with extensions 5 passing through the tanks 1 to increase the effective depth. The oil for the tanks enters through a fueling line 9 to an oil control manifold 10 whence it may be distributed to any selected tank through the appropriate conduit 11 and service head 12. Oil is discharged from any selected tank through the service head and oil manifold to a service tank 13 whence it passes through a service riser 14 to a pump 15 and thence to the fires or Diesel engines. Water for the tanks, which are kept constantly full with either oil, water, or a mixture thereof, is pumped directly from the sea by a pump 16 to a main water supply line 17 thence to the water control manifold 18, whence it may be directed to any desired tank through the water conduit 19 and water leg 21 terminating in a flaring mouth at the bottom of the tank. The operating head at which the water acts to move the oil is determined by a service riser 22 extending upwards from the manifold 18 and connected therewith to the overflow line 23 discharging overboard. The service head associated with each tank comprises a trunk 26, Fig. 3, provided with a fill conduit 27 and delivery conduit both leading to a common oil conduit 11. The limits to which water rises and falls in the tank is automatically controlled by check valves 32, 36 controlled by floats 35, 42, which float in water and sink in oil. The oil manifold comprsies a housing 52, Fig. 6, divided by horizontal and vertical compartments 53, 56. The upper compartments communicate with the lower compartments by way of ports 59, 60 controlled by manually-operated valves 61, 62. The upper compartments are in communication with the fueling line and service tank and the lower one with the tanks through the lines 11. The water manifold comprises a battery of water-control valves 66, Fig. 8, enclosed in a housing 67 transversely partitioned at 68 and 69. A valve stem working axially in the housing carries valves 75, 76, seating on the partitions and alternately and oppositely opened and shut by a lever 77. The central compartment 72 is connected with the watersupply conduit 19, the forward compartments with the main water supply line 17 through the feed line 80 and the rear compartment 71 is connected to the service riser through the line 83. The tanks are kept full of liquid when not in use by a bleeder or make-up line connected with the main water line. A three-way water-control valve similar in construction to the valve shown in Fig. 8 is provided in the main water-supply line to enable water to be drawn from any selected tank. Suitable manipulation of the various valves permits the operations of water filling, fueling, oil-delivery, oil transfer from tank to tank, discharge of oil overboard, oil clearance of service heads and water cleaning of tanks to be effected.
