Abstract

Hydrogenation, destructive; hydrocarbons, cracking.-Low boiling point hydrocarbons are obtained from mineral oils, tars, products of the hydrogenation, distillation or conversion of coals, tars, oils and the like into low boiling products, by acting upon the said materials at an elevated temperature and in the presence, or not, of gases or vapours with aldehydes or ketones which latter contain more than three carbon atoms in the molecule. Metals, oxides or salts may be employed in addition to, or in combination with, the aldehydes and ketones. In examples (1) 100 parts of producer tar, free from benzine, heated in an autoclave with 5 parts of propionic aldehyde for 4 hours at 400-430‹ C. yield 38 parts of products boiling below 200‹ C.; (2) 100 parts mineral oil, free from benzine, distilled with 5 parts benzophenone in a nickel-chromium steel retort yield 17 parts of products boiling below 200‹ C.; (3) low temperature tar,- free from benzine, is dropped at 600‹ C. and in a current of hydrogen on to pumice impregnated with 5 per cent of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and contained in a copper-nickel alloy column; 96 per cent of liquid products is obtained, of which 29 per cent boils below 200‹ C.; (4) 100 parts of thin tar, free from benzine, treated with 4 parts of 40 per cent formaldehyde and 1 part of aluminium chloride in an autoclave for 3 hours at 400-440‹ C. yields 44.4 parts of product boiling below 200‹ C.
