Abstract

315,986. Massey, C. W. W. July 5, 1928. Collision-guards.- Tn a vehicle bumper of the kind having a pneumatic impact member in the form of an inflated rubber tube, the impact member 1, Fig. 1, is fixed to a transverse leaf spring 8 supported in front of the vehicle by two quarter elliptic springs 12 mounted on the dumb irons 20. Preferably the impact member comprises an inner inflatable tube 3 and a stronger outer tube 2, Fig. 2, between which at the rear is disposed a metal strip 14 connected by screws 13 to a double leaf spring 8, 10. The ends of the outer tube 3 are closed by caps or plugs 5, which are either screw-threaded or corru. gated or ribbed circumferentially and associated with clips 7. In order to fold the bumper into a vertical position when desired the springs 12 are pivotally supported in brackets 19 secured to the dumb irons by bolts 26, 28, 31, Fig. 4. Each bracket 19 is formed with a pair of upstanding lugs 18 between which the spring d2 passes, while a square-sectioned bolt 21 passes through correspondingly shaped holes in the spring 12 and in a toothed washer 22, which is adapted to co-operate with teeth 23 formed on a lug 18 to retain the bumper in the desired position.
