315,813. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 16, 1928. Carboxylic acids.-Acids are recovered from the oxidation products of paraffin hydrocarbons, waxes, and the like, by saponifying these products with alkaline earths or magnesia, drying the soap obtained and, if required, comminuting it, extracting the unsaponifiable matter with a suitable organic solvent, such as benzine, and decomposing the purified soap with acids, such as sulphuric acid or carbonic acid, if desired with the addition of wetting agents and under pressure. The saponifying agent may be used in aqueous suspension, or in the dry state, and in the latter case such excess should be employed that the mixture containing the soap can be ground to powder before extraction. The saponification may be carried out under pressure. According to examples, calcium hydroxide is used as the saponifying agent, the starting material being a crude oxidation product of paraffin wax.
