Abstract
315,262. Anglo-Chilean Consolidated Nitrate Corporation, (Assignees of Gleason, G. H.). July 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Spray, freezing.-Sodium nitrate is obtained in the form of anhydrous relatively non-hygroscopic spherical particles by spraying the molten commercial product into a cooling atmosphere. The nitrate may be heated to 350‹ C. in a vessel 10, Fig. 1, screened through a false bottom 18 to re. move suspended undissolved impurities such as magnesium compounds, and led by a pipe 22, fitted with cooling fins 41 to cool the mass to near its solidification temperature, to a spraying device 23 comprising a nozzle plate fitted with staggered rows of conical nozzles and set at an angle of 75‹ to the horizontal. Pipes 42, 33 serve to supply air respectively to the fins 41 and to the stream of upwardly moving particles. The solidified granules drop through the cooling chamber 11 into a hopper 34 and are removed by conveyers 35, 36, 37 to bagging-apparatus 38. The spraying nozzles preferably have the form shown in Fig. 5, and to produce particles of a size of 10-10 mesh, the inlet diameter d may be 0.125 ins., the outlet diameter c 0.020 ins., the depth b of the conical portion 0.22 ins., and that a of the cylindrical outlet 0.03 ins. Specification 192,032, [@ass 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], is referred to.
