Cutting and slicing vegetables &c. - In a machine for removing the rind from coconut kernels, the kernels are fed by an endless band 36 on to the upper part of a concave bed 33 where they are engaged by, and impaled on. pins 20 on a rotating resiliently-mounted roller 19 and carried over the bed 33, being forced to conform to the curvature of the latter. The rind is removed by blades 35 on a rotary cutter 6. said blades passing through a gap 34 in the bed 33. The treated kernels are stripped from the pins 20 by a comb 32 and fall down the shoot 42 into a suitable receptacle.. The shaft 15 carrying the roller 19 is driven by worm gearing from the shaft 1 on which the cutter 6 is mounted and is mounted in blocks 16 connected by a stirrup 21. The roller 19 may be raised by a lever 24 connected to the stirrup 21 by a link 22; springs 27 between the stirrup and an upper cross-bar 18 normally hold the roller in its lowest position. The surfaces of the bed 33 and the roller 19 may be spherical or ovate.
