Multiple - way plug cocks.-A multiple-way rotary plug valve more particularly for use in baseexchange watersoftening apparatus comprises a casing 1, Fig. 1, having a plurality of ports 2 - - 6 all arranged in one longitudinally extending zone and a rotary plug 11, Fig. 2, having a plurality of separate angularly - displaced longitudinal recesses, as shown, each being brought into register with the casing ports in succession on rotation of the plug. The lower end of the plug is formed with inclined cam recesses 15, Figs. 2 and 3, corresponding to the number of circumferential recesses in the plug with corresponding abutment members, for example adjustable screws 16, on the casing; alternatively, the cam recesses are formed in the casing in conjunction with projections below the plug. This arrangement causes an axial unseating of the plug each time it is moved, which gives easy turning and also allows the closure surfaces to be washed by the liquid; the washing liquid and any leakage gathers in a chamber 27, Fig. 5, below the plug and is discharged automatically through a bore 28 in the casing or may be drained away by a cock 29. The plug is rotatable in one direction only by a handle 22 and a ratchet-device 23. An indicating- finger 26 and dial-plate 24 are used. The cam recesses 15 are formed with a vertical side also to prevent reverse rotation. The port 6 in the casing is connected to the main water supply and the port 5 leads to the points of use. The ports 2, 4 are connected to the top and bottom respectively of the water-softening apparatus, the port 3 being provided with a drain connection.
