Filling materials into hinged boxes.-In apparatus for opening hinged boxes preparatory to filling, clips 2, Fig. 1, on endless chains 2<a> feed the boxes to position A against a stop 5. At this point, the clips disengage the box by passing over a sprocket 3b, and a lever 4 pivoted at 4<a> is turned by a cam 3 to hold the box fixed against the stop. In this position, the lid 1<a> of the box is pressed against a fillet 7 on a lever 9 pivoted at 9<a> at one or both sides of the apparatus. The fillet may be surfaced with rubber, plush, &c., or studded with points 8, so as to engage the edge of the lid. The lever 9 is now rotated into the position shown in broken lines, carrying the lid with it into the open position. A guide 15 acts on a roller 14 to raise the fillet out of engagement with the lid, and a spring 16 passes laterally against the lid to beep it open. The bearing of the pivot 9<a> is adjustable so that it can be set to coincide with the hinge of the lid. After opening, the box is fed away for filling &c. at right angles to its previous movement, a guide 18 maintaining the lid in position. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the pivot 9<b> of the lever 9 is arranged slightly above the axis of rotation 7<b> of the lid, so that, on rising to the open position, the fillet 7 is gradually disengaged from the lid. A spring bolt 20, arranged in a frame 22 attached to the fillet engages beneath the lid and holds it in the open position. In a similar form, the fillet is spring-mounted and is made to describe the same arc a by means of a curved cam surface, the axes 7b, 9<b> being co-incident. In order to prevent the box body from being raised with the lid during the opening process, the box may be held between a guide 23, Fig. 7, and a slide 26 with points 34. As soon as the box-opening device 9 operates, a slide 25 is pushed to the left to overlie the box body and prevent it from rising. The slides are operated from one cam 28, a lostmotion device 32, 33 permitting the slide 25 to come into action before the slide 26 disengages.
