Illumination, changing advertisements by controlling. - Apparatus for displaying advertising and like matter by the use of light of complementary colours comprises a surface 1 bearing display matter 3 in a neutral colour and other display matter 4, 5<1> in a distinctive spectral pigment, contrasting spectral colours, one of which corresponds substantially to the pigment colour, being used for illuminating. In the example shown in Fig. 1 the surface 1 is of a light neutral colour, the representation 3 in a dark neutral colour, and the wording 4, 5<1> in red. Blue lamps 6 and red lamps 5 are illuminated in succession by a rotary switch 7 in such a manner that the red lamps 5 on the left hand side and the blue lamps 6 on the right band side are simultaneously lit, to be succeeded by simultaneous illumination of the blue lamps 6 on the left side and the red lamps 5 on the right. Differently coloured matter, such as orange, may be added on the surface, and the lamps may at times be all lit simultaneously, so as to produce a substantially white light. Means may also be provided for the gradual dimming and illumination of the lights. Specification 313,457 is referred to.
